Dr. Mike Yang
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from Queen's University, Dr. Yang returned to his hometown of Waterloo to complete his Doctor of Optometry degree at University of Waterloo School of Optometry. With a keen interest in managing eye diseases such as glaucoma and complications from diabetes, Dr. Yang traveled to Oklahoma in 2012 for a clinical externship at Jack C. Montgomery Hospital. He also interned at practices in Oakville and Vancouver to gain further experience providing comprehensive eye exams.
Dr. Yang graduated in 2013 on the Dean's Honours list, receiving the Vision Care Institute award for a paper he wrote on contact lens fitting, and the Allergan award for a paper on dry eye and allergies. Upon graduation, Dr. Yang joined the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) at the University of Waterloo. He is involved in studies that examined the performance of novel contact lens materials, special contact lenses that can slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, and medications for post surgical care of patients undergoing laser eye surgery. After returning to private practice, he still spends part of his week researching at CORE.
Dr. Yang is fluent in Mandarin and in 2008 studied as an exchange student at Fudan University, an university in China known for academic excellence. In 2013, Dr. Yang volunteered with a group of doctors to Mexico, providing eye care to the local residents of Zihuatanejo. When he is not working, he coached badminton at the Grand River Chinese School and enjoys playing the sport at local racquet clubs.
